How does the ARTAS® Robotic System Work?

The ARTAS Robotic Procedure is a minimally invasive hair restoration solution, which uses digital imaging and precision robotics to harvest healthy grafts for transplantation.  Dr. Weiss uses the ARTAS® System to perform follicular unit extraction (FUE). Hair grafts are taken from the back and sides of the scalp until an adequate has been harvested for transplant to the balding area. Unlike earlier methods of hair restoration, cutting a strip of tissue from the back and sides of the head is not required.  There is no linear scar from the ARTAS procedure and no need for stitches or staples to close the wound. The benefits are a quick recovery, less discomfort, and the ability to return to regular activities and work sooner.

What is recovery from ARTAS® Hair Restoration like?

Recovery from the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant is shorter than most other cosmetic procedures. There are no lengthy incisions or stitches required with the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant.  Healing time is short, and you can go back to your daily activities after a day or two.  Dr. Weiss finds that most patients prefer to take the rest of the week off and return to work on Monday.

How is the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant different than “Hair Plugs”?

Old fashioned “hair plugs” included the harvesting and implanting large patches of hair that resulted in an awkward and unnatural appearance like doll hair. In the ARTAS Robotic Procedure, hairs are harvested with high power magnification in their natural groupings and then transplanted one at a time.  This FUE technique for hair restoration and individual transplantation of follicular unit grafts provides you with the natural look you desire, including a great looking hairline and thicker head of hair.

Are ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant results permanent?

Yes. The ARTAS Robot is used to perform follicular unit extraction of your own permanently growing hair, typically from the back of your head, and the implants are then grafted to the areas of hair loss on your scalp. The hair grafts are typically not susceptible to the conditions that cause male pattern baldness, so the transplanted hair will last a lifetime.

How long does it take to recover and heal from hair transplant surgery using FUE techniques?

Recovery from the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant is shorter than most surgical cosmetic procedures. There are no lengthy incisions or stitches required with the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant, healing time is short, and you can usually go back to your daily activities after a day or two.  Most patients of Dr. Weiss prefer to take the rest of the week off and return to work on Monday.

When will my new hair start to grow?

Transplanted hair grows naturally in phases.  New hairs are seen about three months after the procedure, and will continue to increase over the course of a full year. At approximately six months, you will enjoy a noticeable improvement and after a full year, you will see final results.

Will people know I have had a hair transplant procedure for hair loss?

When Dr. Weiss performs ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplantation, scarring is minimal and is nearly undetectable.  Your new hair grows in gradually, reducing the chance that people will notice the procedure. Your friends and family may comment that you look better, but the results from your hair transplant are subtle and natural.

Does the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant procedure hurt?

ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant is an outpatient procedure performed in the office of Dr. Sean Weiss – Facial Plastic Surgery in Metairie, Louisiana and requires only a local anesthesia. You will feel virtually no pain during hair restoration surgery.  Some patients can experience minor discomfort and swelling after hair restoration performed using Follicular Unit Extraction techniques, which subsides in one to three days.

What is the cost of the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant?

Treatment costs will be determined during your consultation with your doctor and depend on the amount of new hair that you desire. Discuss the procedure pricing with your doctor, as some doctors may offer payment options.

Will there be visible scarring from hair restoration?

Dr. Weiss uses the ARTAS Robotic System to selectively perform follicular unit extraction (FUE) rather than removing a large strip of scalp through an incision requiring sutures.  Therefore, there is minimal scarring in the donor area and no need for suture or staple removal.  Hair can be worn short or long and you won’t be limited by having to hide a scar from strip surgery.

How long does the ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant procedure take?

The ARTAS Robotic Hair Transplant usually takes from four to eight hours as determined by your doctor to achieve your hair restoration goals. You are comfortably seated during the process, and Dr. Weiss and staff are there with you to maximize your comfort throughout the procedure.
