Otoplasty (Ear Pinning)

Many patients are unhappy with the shape or size of their ears – they stick out too far or may be too large. This dislike for their ears often begins in childhood, usually resulting from excessive teasing. Some individuals are born with ear defects, while others may have a deformity caused by a trauma to the ear. Whatever the case may be, Dr. Weiss is able to perform an otoplasty to correct unwanted cosmetic issues of the ears.

Otoplasty surgery can reposition the ears and reduce their size so that the ears appear less prominent and more in proportion with the face. Because it is easier to shape the cartilage of younger patients, Dr. Weiss advises patients who are considering otoplasty to move forward with the procedure sooner than later. However, because ears typically reach their full growth size between the ages of 5 or 6 years old, children should be at least 5 years old to undergo the procedure. If patients are 5 years old and over, Dr. Weiss can help their parents to determine if he or she is ready for otoplasty.
