Chemical Peels FAQ
In New Orleans
How are chemical peels performed?
All types and strengths of peels are done in the office. Dr. Weiss will typically discuss your current skin care regimen and may recommend specific products to use to prepare the skin a couple of weeks before the peel. Peel solutions will be applied to the face with varying strengths, time, and types of peels depending on the patient’s individual needs.
Do chemical peels hurt?
Superficial or light peels may cause a slight burning sensation very briefly while deeper peels may require medication to make the procedure as comfortable as possible.
What is the typical recovery for a peel?
Superficial peels will create slight redness for about 24 hours while deeper peels may take up to 7-10 days to finish peeling. The skin may be red for up to 2 weeks after a chemical peel.
How may peels will a patient need?
This varies from patient to patient depending on the severity and depth of damage to the skin. Healthier skin may only require one or two superficial peels. Skin that has deeper damage may need 3-5 lighter chemical peels over the course of several months or may be treated with a single deep peel.
How long will the chemical peel results last?
Longer lasting results occur when a patient takes good care of their skin after the treatment. Sunscreen is important in aftercare to prevent damage from reoccurring. Dr. Weiss will recommend specific skin care products that contain collagen stimulation to help keep your skin glowing and healthy. In general, the deeper the peel, the longer the results last. Superficial peels should last several months and deeper peels should last several years.
When can I wear make-up after a chemical peel?
Make-up can be worn the next day after a superficial peel. After deeper chemical peels, make-up should not be applied until the skin has healed which is usually about 10 days.
What should I wash my face with after a superficial chemical peel?
Dr. Weiss recommends using a gentle and mild face soap like Cetophil or Dove until you have completely healed.
Should I take medications before a chemical peel?
It is important to let Dr. Weiss know if you have had cold sores or herpes virus in your past. Medications prior to treatment will be required to protect the skin from an outbreak.
How much does a chemical peel cost?
The cost of a chemical peel depends on the strength of treatment that you need. To find out how much your chemical peel will cost, schedule a consultation with Dr. Weiss by calling our office at (504) 814-3223.
